Once nestled in the bustling intersection of Preston and Beltline, the Northern Texas Professional Golf Association (NTPGA) faced a pivotal moment of transformation. As their lease dwindled—or perhaps, serendipitously freed them—the organization saw a golden opportunity to redefine their presence in the world of golf. The move to Frisco was not just a change of address but a strategic leap towards aligning with the PGA headquarters and embedding themselves in the epicenter of PGA activities.
The relocation of the NTPGA headquarters to the DFW area was more than just a logistical decision; it was a strategic move to be closer to the heart of the PGA’s activities. This move was driven by the desire to create a more impactful and visible presence within the golfing community.

The Significant Role of the NTPGA
Before diving into the project specifics, it’s essential to understand the organizational structure of the PGA and the NTPGA. The PGA has a main office and 41 satellite offices, including the NTPGA. These satellite offices are crucial for maintaining a hands-on approach within their respective communities. For the NTPGA, this meant supporting local golf courses with programs, camps, and educational initiatives, particularly aimed at children.
One of the key aspirations for the new headquarters was to create a place where the PGA’s presence could be more experiential and tangible. Previously, the NTPGA operated somewhat behind the scenes. While they played a significant role in organizing programs and camps, the general public, especially the children attending these programs, often didn’t have a direct connection with the organization. The new headquarters aimed to change that by offering a space to host their own camps and activities, making the PGA more relatable and accessible.
“Any project is more meaningful when there’s a personal connection. Growing up as a kid, if I had had the opportunity to go to a place like NTPGA and hang out, learn how to play the game, and rub shoulders with the pros.”
Mick Granlund, Director of Planning & Business Development at O’Brien Architects
Crafting a Vision for Community and Growth
A pivotal goal for the NTPGA was to have a facility that promoted the enjoyment and growth of the game. Their objective is to contribute to the game’s growth by providing services to professionals and the golf industry. This includes fostering relationships with professional golfers, many of whom have come through the PGA’s programs as children and now give back to the community by supporting local initiatives.
The new headquarters would serve as an office space and a hub for various golfing activities. It would feature an 18-hole putting green course, regulation-sized greens for practicing chipping and putting, and proximity to a driving range. This setup would allow them to conduct comprehensive camps and programs, allowing children to learn and practice all aspects of the game in one location. The goal was to create a physical presence where people could learn, play, and connect.
This vision extended beyond just the physical space. It was about fostering a sense of community and making the PGA’s mission more visible and impactful. By having a dedicated facility, the NTPGA could enhance their fundraising efforts, support more scholarships, and engage with the community meaningfully. This project was about building a headquarters and creating a lasting legacy to inspire and nurture the next generation of golfers.
The Significance of Overcoming Hurdles
Creating the NTPGA headquarters was not without its challenges. The journey from concept to completion was filled with hurdles that required perseverance, collaboration, and a shared sense of purpose. Initially, we interviewed for the PGA project but didn’t get selected. When the opportunity for the NTPGA headquarters came up, we almost couldn’t believe it, but it turned out to be a genuine chance to make a significant impact.
Winning the project wasn’t easy. We were one of ten architects competing for it, and the interview process was intense. We focused on our personal stories, how we work, and our collaborative approach. We had nothing to lose, so we laid it all on the line. The room was filled with wonderful, humble people with servant hearts, and sparks flew. It was a magical experience that ultimately led to our selection.
Maintaining Vision Through Uncertainty
A significant part of our success was the aligning values between O’Brien Architects and the NTPGA. We’re both deeply committed to giving back to the community. The shared sense of purpose about pouring into things that aren’t tangible but incredibly impactful made a huge difference. Even when COVID hit, and the project faced setbacks, we stuck with it. For over a year, we worked for free, keeping the project on life support. The popularity of golf surged during the pandemic, and the project gained momentum again.
One of the major players that helped push the project forward was the general contractor, Tally Riggins. They were fantastic to work with, truly understanding the vision and the importance of certain details. They collaborated closely with us to ensure that the design intent was met, ensuring the headquarters and pavilion would be a great space for the kids and the community.
“The fact that they’re able to impact and change the lives of the younger people in the community is something we also value. We’re always trying to impact those around us and the communities and environments that we design. Having parallel values made this a fun and fulfilling project to work on.”
Amador Saucedo, AIA, Director of Design at O’Brien Architects
Storytelling Through Architectural Design
The design of the NTPGA headquarters is full of thoughtful details and unique elements that reflect the organization’s story and mission. One of the standout features is the large screen that showcases a projected image of a golf pro teaching a kid how to swing a golf club. This picture is from the NTPGA archives, depicting a moment that symbolizes their commitment to starting young. It’s a powerful visual representation of their story and mission.
Incorporating History
Additionally, the project includes a “walk of fame,” with placards inside the ground that tell the stories of past members and milestones from the NTPGA. This storytelling continues inside the building with branding elements, such as Ben Hogan’s golf clubs in the conference room and quotes from members throughout the space. It’s all about making the NTPGA’s rich history and impact tangible and visible to everyone who visits.
From a planning perspective, we wanted the experience to start even before visitors entered the building. We created two buildings—the main office complex and a separate indoor and outdoor training pavilion. The space between them, a promenade, offers a visual connection to the covered area and putting greens beyond. As visitors approach, they can see through this gap, enhancing the anticipation and excitement.
Creating an Inviting Space
We arranged the site so that as parents drive in to drop off their kids, they pass by green spaces and simulate putting greens. This layout ensures that the experience begins when they arrive, creating a sense of excitement and engagement. The buildings are positioned to offer panoramic views of the big PGA golf course, adding to the overall aesthetic and experiential value.
The thoughtful design extends to every aspect of the project. For example, we wanted to ensure the space felt open, playful, and inviting. Unlike typical office buildings, which can seem uninviting, this project was designed to be welcoming and community-focused. The CEO of the NTPGA emphasized the importance of the urban golf course, which was designed by a team that included Tiger Woods’ architect. This course is a central feature, offering a green space that feels like the heart of the community.
At night, the area comes alive with lights, creating a magical atmosphere where families and kids can enjoy the space without any obligation to spend money. It’s about creating a community hub where everyone feels welcome and can engage with the sport meaningfully. The selflessness and vision behind this project are truly inspiring, making it a beautiful addition to North Texas.
Design Team Collaboration
One nuance of this project was the collaborative effort with key players in the design team. We worked closely with Drew Bryant, who was previously with Slate Shepherd, which Elevate Sports Ventures acquired. He had significant experience with environmental and branding components from his work on the Star. Drew’s expertise was invaluable, and he contributed to many of the signature moments in designing the environmental spaces. His ideas and input were integral to the project’s success, ensuring that the NTPGA’s story was effectively communicated throughout the facility.
Additionally, Brian Adams from SMR Landscape played a crucial role as the landscape architect. His vision and design helped shape the outdoor spaces, making them functional, inviting, and aesthetically pleasing. Brian’s work on the green spaces and integrating the putting greens and landscaping elements were vital in creating the overall experience for visitors.
The collaborative efforts of these talented professionals and our team at O’Brien Architects brought the vision for the NTPGA headquarters to life. Their contributions helped ensure that every project detail was thoughtfully designed and executed, creating a beautiful and functional space for the community.
“Golf is an amazing game, and this project provides opportunities to people who may not have had the chance to experience it for financial reasons or other barriers. The ability to reach a larger group of people and provide opportunities they may not have had without this project is the real power of it. It’s about making a real difference in people’s lives.”
Sean O’Brien, CEO of O’Brien Architects
The Impact of Community-Centered Design
The impact of the NTPGA headquarters on the community cannot be overstated. This project was about more than just creating a physical space; it was about fostering a sense of community, providing opportunities, and inspiring the next generation of golfers. Being a part of this project has been incredibly fulfilling for us at O’Brien, and we are proud of the lasting legacy it will leave in North Texas.
Reflecting on this project, we are reminded of the power of collaboration and shared vision. The NTPGA headquarters is a testament to what can be achieved when dedicated people come together with a common goal. It’s a space where kids can learn, play, and grow, the community can come together and engage with the sport, and the love of golf can be nurtured and celebrated.
We are grateful to have been a part of this journey and contributed to a project that will positively impact the North Texas community. The NTPGA headquarters is more than just a building—it’s a beacon of opportunity, a hub of activity, and a symbol of the transformative power of sport and community.
